Hidden Medical College – Gives You a Different Study Abroad Experience (SGU Grenada)

In the 2019 Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education Examination (HKDSE), 10 of the 12 toppers chose to study medicine; and of the seven top scorers in 2020, three of the four admitted to HKU studied medicine. There are only two options for entering medical school in Hong Kong, the University of Hong Kong or the Chinese University, and the admission scores of these two universities' medical schools are close to full marks; Adrian has seen too many aspirants to enter medical school in the past few years, but because they are only one point away, they pass by the opportunity to enter medical school.

1. Introduction to SGU

2
Why is SGU called a hidden medical school? Because SGU has nurtured more than 18,000 physicians over the past 43 years, all of whom are qualified to practice in 50 U.S. states and practice in more than 50 countries worldwide. Located in Grenada, West Indies, SGU has transported trained physicians to all parts of the world over the years, and SGU’s Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree has been recognized by medical institutions in the United Kingdom and the United States.
In addition to nurturing more than 18,000 physicians, SGU is the 2nd largest source of exporters in the physician sector among the working population in the United States, making it the 2nd largest international export institution in the United States, according to the 2018 US Medical Regulatory Trends and Actions of the Federation of State Medical Boards.
3
According to 2020 data, SGU provides 1,110 residents in the U.S. No other overseas medical school has produced as many new entrants to the U.S. health care system, in fact, SGU is the #1 exporter of first-year residents in the U.S. over the past 11 years combined.
4 In addition to being accredited by the Grenada government, SGU’s MD program has received accreditation and permission from a number of external and international institutions, demonstrating that the program is recognized and highly accredited in Grenada and other countries.
The following are some of the accredited bodies:
SGU graduates are also allowed to register with medical institutions in the following countries:

5 2

Students must have two years of clinical internship experience before completing SGU's MD program, which has more than 80 affiliated hospitals in the United States, the United Kingdom and Grenada. SGU is an international medical school.

6 2

There are 65 affiliated hospitals and clinical medical centers in the United States, and 12 clinical research centers and four affiliated hospitals and SGU in New York, including The Brooklyn Hospital Center, Manhattan Psychiatric Center, Metropolitan Hospital Center, NYC Health+ Hospitals, Lincoln Medical And Mental Health Center and more.
In addition, if students choose to train in the UK, SGU has 16 partner medical centers to apply for, including St. Ann's Hospital, London, Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust, Hellesdon Hospital, Royal Hampshire County Hospital and more.

2. Admission Requirements and Course Profile for Admission to SGU: Multiple entry points

SGU Medical School offers a flexible MD program with admission eligibility matching students from any education system around the world, including 4-year programs for students with a traditional bachelor’s degree, 5-, 6- and 7-year programs for those with an international educational background, and 5- or 6-year programs for those with a high school diploma (A Level, IB or DSE).
Let me briefly explain how many years of courses students with different educational backgrounds should enroll in.
If you already hold a bachelor's degree in science, regardless of the country, as long as you meet the requirements of medical school, you can directly enter a 4-year MD program, that is, directly enter a two-year basic science program, and then complete two years of clinical science to obtain an MD PhD.
If you are a HKDSE, IB or A Level student in Form 6, the school will arrange for you to enroll in a five- or six-year MD course based on your Diploma results.
If you are a GCSE student with a clear goal of studying medicine, you can enter a 7-year MD course after completing GCSE. The first three years will be a prerequisite course in clinical medicine, the fourth and fifth years will be a basic science course.

7
8

In addition to academic requirements to meet medical school requirements, students must achieve a TOEFL score of 600 (paper and pen test), 250 (computer test) or 100 (online test); or IELTS total score of 7.0.

3. Waiver of Medical College Admission Test (MCAT)

To enter a medical school in the United States, applicants are usually required to take the MCAT (Medical College Admission Test), but SGU exempts international students from taking the MCAT exam. Because the MCAT is an exam centered on American medical schools, international students may not be able to master it in the short term.

4. Outline of the four-year Doctor of Medicine Program (MD)

The first two years of the four-year medical doctoral degree program (MD) are focused on traditional basic science disciplines, and the last two years are focused primarily on the clinical sciences. SGU offers up to 80 weeks of clinical training, with clinical education giving students the opportunity to study medicine at some of the world’s renowned top hospitals. These hospitals are located in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Grenada. Training at these hospitals is in accordance with the SGU School of Medicine’s curriculum setup, curriculum descriptions, and educational objectives, with detailed supervision through hospital visits and faculty meetings. More than 1,000 clinicians conducted teaching during the clinical academic year. In addition to designating clinical professors, the medical school assigns a director of medical education to each clinical medicine center and affiliated hospital and a trainee supervisor for each core clinical specialty conducted therein. The Office of Clinical Research regularly visits affiliated hospitals.

Study opportunities in the UK

You may ask if you must stay in Grenada to study for so many years, if you can go to other countries to experience the healthcare system of different countries, SGU cooperates with Northumbria University in the UK, students can choose to be in Northumbria The third year of prerequisite clinical medicine or the first year of basic science at the University, followed by a return to Grenada to complete the second year of basic science courses, while the last two academic years will follow the teaching tradition and receive clinical internships Development, the department is made up of faculty and old alumni who are experienced in assisting students with internship courses and explaining the exams and procedures for taking and obtaining practice qualifications in the UK and USA, as well as providing professional advice on how to choose a specialty and preparation for taking the practice exam.

10

SGU and Northumbria University (NU) have more than 1,700 medical students admitted to NU since January 2007. Students take the same courses in the UK as those taken in Grenada, but provide students with the opportunity to learn and experience in a different healthcare environment. Both SGU and NU faculty teach according to the same course schedule. Therefore the course setup and examination rhythm follow the same principles and schedule, so that students receive exactly the same instructional materials wherever they are.

6. Return to Hong Kong Practice Qualification/How to Obtain U.S. Practice Qualification?

Grenada Medical and Dental Council (GMDC) – Recognized as the American Council for the Evaluation of Medical Education (LCME) peer accreditation U.S. Department of Education — St. George’s University is recognized as a medical education institution on par with the American College of Physicians

The Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) issued a statement in 2010: After 2023, foreign medical graduates must apply for residency training or practice medicine in the United States.
International Medical Graduate (IMG) must pass the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) to obtain ECFMG certification.
USMLE (United States Medical Licensing Examination) exam
The USMLE is a three-step, four-step examination of Step1, Step2 Clinical Knowledge (CK), Step2 Clinical Skill (CS) and Step3. Step 1 is to examine the content of basic medicine, Step 2 CK examines the content of clinical medical knowledge and Step 2 CS is to see whether the subject can conduct daily diagnosis in accordance with the requirements of the US health care system, and finally Step 3 examines the subject's ability to practice medicine independently.
After completing the certification of ECFMG, IMG can enter the US Resident Training Program (The Match) through the US hospital internship audit, pass at least 3 years of training, and pass the assessment to obtain an independent medical license in the US.

7. USMLE Exam Flow

Step 1> Step 2 CK > Step CS> ECFMG Certification > Residential Training > Step 3 > Complete full US residency training (usually 3 years)
International medical students can choose to complete the STEP 3 exam before THE MATCH

  • The following are the passing scores for USMLE
  • Step 1: 194
  • Step 2 CK: 209
  • Step 3: 196
  • And Step 2 CS will only show Pass or Fail.
12

The pass rate of SGU international students for the first USMLE exam in 2019 is 97%.

Upon completion and passing the exam, students may choose to apply for a specialist qualification and then apply for a license in one of the states in the United States to begin practicing.
How to obtain a qualification to practice in the UK?
There is no nationally unified examination in the UK. The Physicians Act stipulates that examinations implemented by medical schools are national examinations, while foreign medical students must take the Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board (PLAB) directly under the British General Medical Council (GMC). The PLAB is divided into two parts, and only those who pass the PLAB exam, obtain registration and obtain a license from the GMC can practice in the UK.

Eligibility to apply

  1. Medical Degree: The PLAB examination has no strict restrictions on the profession of medical students, as long as they have a medical degree awarded by a medical degree accredited by the World Health Organization (World Health Organization).
  2. Internship experience: One of the requirements for applying for a UK medical license is that a prospective medical school graduate must have twelve months of clinical practice or hospital work experience.
  3. Language Proficiency: Must have a valid and achieved IELTS (Academic) score with a total score of no less than 7 and no less than 7 in each item before applying for PLAB Part1.

The correct steps to obtain a registered doctor in the UK

  1. The IELTS score is up to standard
  2. Take the first, second part of the training in the UK Physician Registration Examination
  3. Apply to qualify for the UK Registered Physician Examination
  4. to the UK for the first part, the second part of the examination
  5. Those who pass the exam find a hospital employer in the UK
  6. Apply for a British medical license

8. How to return to Hong Kong to obtain a qualification to practice

There are two routes for overseas doctors to return to Hong Kong to practice medicine. Only intern doctors who have completed the assessment can apply for formal registration with the Medical Commission. The Practice Qualification Examination is held twice a year and is divided into three parts (see table below), and candidates must pass a professional knowledge examination and a medical English skills level test before applying for the clinical examination. After passing all examinations, candidates officially become registered doctors and can practice freely in Hong Kong.

13

The second is that overseas doctors can also come to Hong Kong to practice medicine through "limited registration" without taking a practice examination. "Limited Registration" means that individual hospitals and institutions recommend foreign specialists to the Medical Commission according to their needs. After passing the assessment, they can come to Hong Kong to practice medicine. The Limited Registration is valid for up to three years and may be renewed upon expiration.

9. Registration Procedure

Overseas doctors who apply for the practice examination for the first time must return to the university they attend in person with the registration form, and be supervised by a notary to verify their identity. In addition the trial period for the practice examination is generally held between the end of November and the beginning of December each year, with the Medical Commission only announcing the exact date six weeks before the examination.

SGU school building environment

Have you ever imagined that attending medical school can be attended on a campus surrounded by the sea? Grenada is located on the Caribbean Sea coast, and SGU is located at the tip of the True Blue Peninsula in the southwest corner of Grenada. Speaking of being a hidden medical school, to get from Hong Kong to Grenada, first take a 16-hour flight to New York, then take about 5 hours direct flight to Grenada; Although the flight is longer, it is worth it when you see the endless sea views of the Caribbean coast.
14 Boasting beautiful bays and beaches, tropical rainforests, mountains and waterfalls, Grenada’s beaches are one of the hottest attractions in the area, and for a more tranquil place, head to Black Bay Beach on the west coast or White Beach at Epping Lance Beach on the south end. The school's environment is excellent, many corners can see the sea, and 100 feet from the school building can go to the beach, I wonder which medical school in the world can allow you to take a Break on the beach between classes?

10. SGU Tuition

SGU’s program is a U.S.-centric medical degree program, so tuition will be in US dollars.

Advanced Placement in Clinical Medicine

Hidden Medical College – Gives You a Different Study Abroad Experience (SGU Grenada)

Federation of State Medical Boards的2018年US Medical Regulatory Trends and Actions,SGU是全美勞動人口中,醫師界別的第 2 大輸出來源,成為美國第 2 大國際輸出院校。 Ann’s Hospital, London, Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust, Hellesdon Hospital, Royal Hampshire County Hospital等等。 2. […]

Overseas Summer Curriculum Change: From 'Experience Life' to 'Practical Gains'

Summer vacation, for many parents, has been a "paradoxical holiday". On the one hand, they hope that their children can have time to relax and rest, and on the other hand, they expect their children to make the most of their leisure time to enrich themselves. Therefore, in recent years, more and more parents have arranged for their children to attend overseas summer courses, which not only broadens their knowledge, but also paves the way for further education. Vincent Tang, executive director of external affairs at LINKEDU, said parents’ mindset when inquiring about overseas summer courses has been quietly changing in recent years. "In the past, we mainly focused on basic factors such as course content, living facilities and price, but in recent years, we have focused more on children's 'practical gain' in the entire course." He described this practical thinking as more common among parents of students aged 15 or above. "I can understand the practical considerations of parents. After all, they have to pay a large amount of money. Of course, I hope that their children can learn more knowledge, experience culture and gain maximum benefits through these courses. Especially for parents of students who are about to enter university, this is very consistent with their actual admission rules For parents of students who still have 4 to 6 years to face the choice of further education, Vincent also recommends that they should be far-sighted, guide their young children to explore interests and directions early, and observe and give advice from the sidelines, rather than blindly pursuing admission to high-ranking universities or theology. From boarding experience to specialist orientation With more and more parents “deploying ahead”, Vincent has found that planners of UK boarding schools and summer courses are also responding quickly to market needs. “In recent years, there have obviously been many new summer courses for STEM subjects or specialty-based subjects. They are different from the traditional ‘boarding school experience’ and focus on ‘specialist training’ and ‘industry experience’ to encourage students to discover individuals by participating in different specialist activities Interest, to prepare for the future, also in line with the requirements of 'goal-based' parents and students." He also shared that after meeting with representatives of different boarding schools and summer courses, the changes in the summer courses could be seen from the latest course information provided by each other, and cited the following two courses as examples: Example 1: Abbotsholme School Veterinary and Animal Science Summer Course The summer course is explicitly themed “veterinary medicine” and “animal science” for students aged 15 to 17. "This is a summer course that combines 'specialist training' and 'boarding school experience' to attract students who are interested in animals and also attract the attention of parents who value 'specialist way out'. The course enrolls high school students aged 15 or above. They are relatively more mature and have some ideas and directions for their future development. As a taster session, students can try and learn about veterinary work and study early in the UK The summer thematic experience is aimed at students aged 11 to 14 and covers experiences in a variety of specialized categories including engineering, medicine, finance, computers and artificial intelligence, and offers a traditional boarding school stay. "Dulwich College is a long-established boarding school in the UK that is extremely attractive to parents. It is also a two-in-one summer course with 'specialist training' combined with 'boarding school experience'. The enrollment is younger, which shows that the market has begun to respond to the exploration needs of young students. "Today's students are very happy, have the opportunity to visit neighboring Asian countries, even Europe and America, exposed to different educational culture. I recently heard that Austria, Sweden and other places, also intend to come to Hong Kong to promote their summer courses and boarding schools, also just encourage Hong Kong students dare to do diverse development

How should the future industrial direction be grasped from the Budget to see the deployment of higher education?

The Financial Budget announced by the government every year not only involves the economy and people's livelihood, but also points out the direction for the future development of the city. Vincent Tang, executive director of external affairs at LINKEDU, said every decision made by the government to invest resources is actually heralding the future direction of the city's industry, which will more or less affect students and parents' choices for planning their education, career and future development. Vincent continued that Hong Kong is an international city that accommodates diverse development while retaining its unique advantages in culture, media and art. In the new Budget, the government is keen to develop industries with "higher professional and technical content". 2. Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its related The Budget proposes universal AI training to offer AI application courses for students and the general public to improve AI literacy across the nation. 3. Aerospace Engineering, Robotics Engineering, Automotive Engineering These engineering sectors have advantages, especially the industry has recently recruited and trained talents for aircraft maintenance, development of autonomous driving, automatic programs. 4. Freight Logistics, Aviation (Airport) Management Several chapters in the Budget mention the development of maritime and air transport measures, which, driven by the government, bring demand for talents from relevant disciplines. 5. Event Management, Tourism Management Several international conferences have been held in Hong Kong over the past year, including APAIE, one of the three major international higher education conferences. The introduction of more events and international conferences will drive the local demand for talent in the disciplines of event management and tourism management. In addition to the emerging disciplines or industries mentioned above, Vincent also mentioned that Hong Kong has its own traditional advantages in areas that highlight its professional characteristics if it can keep pace with the times. He cited law as an example. The Budget aims to build Hong Kong into an international legal and dispute resolution service center Students and parents in Hong Kong have long sought after popular disciplines such as medicine, dentistry and business, making admission applications for related health sciences and biology more competitive. Vincent said: "This year's Budget proposes several highly valuable 'non-biological' areas, which deserve students to re-examine their development prospects. In addition to traditional 'divine subjects', they can also look at emerging areas. I often emphasize that the subject studied today is not the only way out in the future For students who are facing difficulties in choosing a subject, especially if they will be applying to university within 2 to 3 years, Vincent offers a specific and practical advice—take time to participate in relevant activities in the field of interest during Form 4 and Form 5. "It's best to have activities that allow students to participate in person and learn about their interests and ideas in these disciplines through real people. And individual overseas summer courses with university selection and career orientation are also a shortcut for students to learn more about related specialties in a short time."
