1. Introduction to SGU
![]()
Why is SGU called a hidden medical school? Because SGU has nurtured more than 18,000 physicians over the past 43 years, all of whom are qualified to practice in 50 U.S. states and practice in more than 50 countries worldwide. Located in Grenada, West Indies, SGU has transported trained physicians to all parts of the world over the years, and SGU’s Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree has been recognized by medical institutions in the United Kingdom and the United States.
In addition to nurturing more than 18,000 physicians, SGU is the 2nd largest source of exporters in the physician sector among the working population in the United States, making it the 2nd largest international export institution in the United States, according to the 2018 US Medical Regulatory Trends and Actions of the Federation of State Medical Boards.![]()
According to 2020 data, SGU provides 1,110 residents in the U.S. No other overseas medical school has produced as many new entrants to the U.S. health care system, in fact, SGU is the #1 exporter of first-year residents in the U.S. over the past 11 years combined.
In addition to being accredited by the Grenada government, SGU’s MD program has received accreditation and permission from a number of external and international institutions, demonstrating that the program is recognized and highly accredited in Grenada and other countries.
The following are some of the accredited bodies:
SGU graduates are also allowed to register with medical institutions in the following countries:

Students must have two years of clinical internship experience before completing SGU's MD program, which has more than 80 affiliated hospitals in the United States, the United Kingdom and Grenada. SGU is an international medical school.

There are 65 affiliated hospitals and clinical medical centers in the United States, and 12 clinical research centers and four affiliated hospitals and SGU in New York, including The Brooklyn Hospital Center, Manhattan Psychiatric Center, Metropolitan Hospital Center, NYC Health+ Hospitals, Lincoln Medical And Mental Health Center and more.
In addition, if students choose to train in the UK, SGU has 16 partner medical centers to apply for, including St. Ann's Hospital, London, Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust, Hellesdon Hospital, Royal Hampshire County Hospital and more.
2. Admission Requirements and Course Profile for Admission to SGU: Multiple entry points
SGU Medical School offers a flexible MD program with admission eligibility matching students from any education system around the world, including 4-year programs for students with a traditional bachelor’s degree, 5-, 6- and 7-year programs for those with an international educational background, and 5- or 6-year programs for those with a high school diploma (A Level, IB or DSE).
Let me briefly explain how many years of courses students with different educational backgrounds should enroll in.
If you already hold a bachelor's degree in science, regardless of the country, as long as you meet the requirements of medical school, you can directly enter a 4-year MD program, that is, directly enter a two-year basic science program, and then complete two years of clinical science to obtain an MD PhD.
If you are a HKDSE, IB or A Level student in Form 6, the school will arrange for you to enroll in a five- or six-year MD course based on your Diploma results.
If you are a GCSE student with a clear goal of studying medicine, you can enter a 7-year MD course after completing GCSE. The first three years will be a prerequisite course in clinical medicine, the fourth and fifth years will be a basic science course.

In addition to academic requirements to meet medical school requirements, students must achieve a TOEFL score of 600 (paper and pen test), 250 (computer test) or 100 (online test); or IELTS total score of 7.0.
3. Waiver of Medical College Admission Test (MCAT)
To enter a medical school in the United States, applicants are usually required to take the MCAT (Medical College Admission Test), but SGU exempts international students from taking the MCAT exam. Because the MCAT is an exam centered on American medical schools, international students may not be able to master it in the short term.
4. Outline of the four-year Doctor of Medicine Program (MD)
The first two years of the four-year medical doctoral degree program (MD) are focused on traditional basic science disciplines, and the last two years are focused primarily on the clinical sciences. SGU offers up to 80 weeks of clinical training, with clinical education giving students the opportunity to study medicine at some of the world’s renowned top hospitals. These hospitals are located in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Grenada. Training at these hospitals is in accordance with the SGU School of Medicine’s curriculum setup, curriculum descriptions, and educational objectives, with detailed supervision through hospital visits and faculty meetings. More than 1,000 clinicians conducted teaching during the clinical academic year. In addition to designating clinical professors, the medical school assigns a director of medical education to each clinical medicine center and affiliated hospital and a trainee supervisor for each core clinical specialty conducted therein. The Office of Clinical Research regularly visits affiliated hospitals.

5. The process of pursuing a Doctor of Medicine (MD)

Grenada Medical and Dental Council (GMDC) – Recognized as the American Council for the Evaluation of Medical Education (LCME) peer accreditation U.S. Department of Education — St. George’s University is recognized as a medical education institution on par with the American College of Physicians

The Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) issued a statement in 2010: After 2023, foreign medical graduates must apply for residency training or practice medicine in the United States.
International Medical Graduate (IMG) must pass the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE) to obtain ECFMG certification.
USMLE (United States Medical Licensing Examination) exam
The USMLE is a three-step, four-step examination of Step1, Step2 Clinical Knowledge (CK), Step2 Clinical Skill (CS) and Step3. Step 1 is to examine the content of basic medicine, Step 2 CK examines the content of clinical medical knowledge and Step 2 CS is to see whether the subject can conduct daily diagnosis in accordance with the requirements of the US health care system, and finally Step 3 examines the subject's ability to practice medicine independently.
After completing the certification of ECFMG, IMG can enter the US Resident Training Program (The Match) through the US hospital internship audit, pass at least 3 years of training, and pass the assessment to obtain an independent medical license in the US.
7. USMLE Exam Flow
Step 1> Step 2 CK > Step CS> ECFMG Certification > Residential Training > Step 3 > Complete full US residency training (usually 3 years)
International medical students can choose to complete the STEP 3 exam before THE MATCH
- The following are the passing scores for USMLE
- Step 1: 194
- Step 2 CK: 209
- Step 3: 196
- And Step 2 CS will only show Pass or Fail.

The pass rate of SGU international students for the first USMLE exam in 2019 is 97%.
Upon completion and passing the exam, students may choose to apply for a specialist qualification and then apply for a license in one of the states in the United States to begin practicing.

There is no nationally unified examination in the UK. The Physicians Act stipulates that examinations implemented by medical schools are national examinations, while foreign medical students must take the Professional and Linguistic Assessments Board (PLAB) directly under the British General Medical Council (GMC). The PLAB is divided into two parts, and only those who pass the PLAB exam, obtain registration and obtain a license from the GMC can practice in the UK.
Eligibility to apply
- Medical Degree: The PLAB examination has no strict restrictions on the profession of medical students, as long as they have a medical degree awarded by a medical degree accredited by the World Health Organization (World Health Organization).
- Internship experience: One of the requirements for applying for a UK medical license is that a prospective medical school graduate must have twelve months of clinical practice or hospital work experience.
- Language Proficiency: Must have a valid and achieved IELTS (Academic) score with a total score of no less than 7 and no less than 7 in each item before applying for PLAB Part1.

8. How to return to Hong Kong to obtain a qualification to practice
There are two routes for overseas doctors to return to Hong Kong to practice medicine. Only intern doctors who have completed the assessment can apply for formal registration with the Medical Commission. The Practice Qualification Examination is held twice a year and is divided into three parts (see table below), and candidates must pass a professional knowledge examination and a medical English skills level test before applying for the clinical examination. After passing all examinations, candidates officially become registered doctors and can practice freely in Hong Kong.

The second is that overseas doctors can also come to Hong Kong to practice medicine through "limited registration" without taking a practice examination. "Limited Registration" means that individual hospitals and institutions recommend foreign specialists to the Medical Commission according to their needs. After passing the assessment, they can come to Hong Kong to practice medicine. The Limited Registration is valid for up to three years and may be renewed upon expiration.
9. Registration Procedure
Overseas doctors who apply for the practice examination for the first time must return to the university they attend in person with the registration form, and be supervised by a notary to verify their identity. In addition the trial period for the practice examination is generally held between the end of November and the beginning of December each year, with the Medical Commission only announcing the exact date six weeks before the examination.
SGU school building environment
Have you ever imagined that attending medical school can be attended on a campus surrounded by the sea? Grenada is located on the Caribbean Sea coast, and SGU is located at the tip of the True Blue Peninsula in the southwest corner of Grenada. Speaking of being a hidden medical school, to get from Hong Kong to Grenada, first take a 16-hour flight to New York, then take about 5 hours direct flight to Grenada; Although the flight is longer, it is worth it when you see the endless sea views of the Caribbean coast.
Boasting beautiful bays and beaches, tropical rainforests, mountains and waterfalls, Grenada’s beaches are one of the hottest attractions in the area, and for a more tranquil place, head to Black Bay Beach on the west coast or White Beach at Epping Lance Beach on the south end. The school's environment is excellent, many corners can see the sea, and 100 feet from the school building can go to the beach, I wonder which medical school in the world can allow you to take a Break on the beach between classes?
